The Movie Confession Blogathon

Normally I don't do these blogathon type things, but this seemed interesting (plus my favorite site Deep Red Rum did it). It originally started on MyFilmViews and all the cool kids are doing it, so I have to ruin the party with my weirdo self!

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

Hammer Films. They're pretty to look at, but boring as fuck. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are great, but these films are not.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

So this is the part where people can point and laugh at me because I haven't seen Casablanca or a number of other classics, while I've seen Samurai Cop at least 10 times in the last month. I have bad taste...shut up.

Anyway...the list:

  1.  Casablanca
  2. Lawrence of Arabia
  3. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (though I do a great Jimmy Stewart swearing impression)
  4. West Side Story (Maria...I didn't see a film about Mariaaa)
  5. Doctor Zhivago (Just looks dull)
  6. Love Story (Love means never having to watch this)
  7. Ben-Hur (Ben-Hur? I've never even met her!)
  8. The Deer Hunter (Bambi playing russian roulette?)
  9. In the Heat of the Night (They call me Mister Pibb!)
  10. Rashamon  (I...have no excuse here)
Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

There was this one time I was running from the cops (never make department store mannequins look like they're giving each other lap dances...the manager gets pissed) and to hide from the cops, I snuck in the backdoor of the theater. Of course, I found out it was an adult theater, and it was playing male gay porn, but I had to hide. I made 14 friends that day.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

John Cusak. Maybe it's just the smarmy way he comes off, but outside of High Fidelity (where he was suppose to play a douchebag) all of the work that he feels is important deep work is pure crap. Hey John, you may hate Better Off Dead, but it sure is better than fucking Martian Child. And stop shoehorning your sister in everything.!

Runner up is Ed Norton, for having the audacity to rewrite his dialogue in his movies. You're not a writer dickhole, stick to acting.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

This question is the hardest to answer because I've seen at least one film from pretty much all of the major directors. From Lang and Browning to Welles to Lumet and Altman. Just now though, a name came up that  would fit the bill...Gus Van Sant. Maybe it's because his work is so depressing, maybe it's the lame hipster title of "auteur" that gets tacked onto him. For one reason or another, I just don't wanna see his films.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

This one is a bit of a tie because I couldn't figure out which was hated more, True Stories or Shock Treatment. In the case of True Stories, I don't know why people hate it. It have great music (some of the best of the Talking Heads) and wonderful characters. There are some segments that drag, like the dinner scene with Spaulding Gray, but overall I loved it.

Shock Treatment is simply because it's not Rocky Horror. That's it. This movie was ahead of it's time about reality television, had arguably better music than Rocky Horror (which I do love), and has a better Janet in Jessica Harper (although Susan Sarandon can fill out a bra better, wink wink nudge nudge). I'm sure I'll get flack for that, but it's my opinion and I'll type if I want to.

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

Only once. Me and a couple buddies had the misfortune to see Batman and Robin in the theater. Instead of fuming at the monstrosity on the screen, we decided to riff it. BADLY. A few shining moments included a PSA beforehand about the exits of the theater, to which my buddy stands up, points to one, and yells "there it is!". I also would take the time to wait for each long pause to go "I'm Batman". By the time the movie was over, everyone hated us, but I'd like to think that those people saw it on video years later and realized that we made the movie better. I'd like to think that, but it's probably a lie.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

I  like many others on this wide weird net, am a big fan of Bruce Campbell. Now while I thankfully avoided watching Alien Invasion, I wasn't so lucky with The Man With the Screaming Brain. I had heard bad things about it, but thought "It's Bruce, how bad could it be?" It was bad. Oh my Lord, it was BAAAAADD.  I actually threw away the DVD halfway through before realizing that it was a rental and had to dig it back out of the garbage.

In short, don't watch The Man With the Screaming Brain. You'll thank me later.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

Hell, I add subtitles to English speaking films because I like them so much. You haven't experienced life if you've never seen Up in Smoke with subtitles.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

I  think a good 40% of the DVD's I own I haven't watched. I think I have an addiction to buying DVD's. I need help. Hold me.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

Hmmm...that's a tough one. I think that it's probably Death Nurse. Not because it's good or anything (it is beyond awful), but because I didn't pay for it and wanna stick it to director Nick Mallard for thinking he's a real filmmaker. I also misspell his last name on purpose.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

Just that I have my desktop hooked up to the television set. So if I want to watch something on Netflix, easy as pie. If I want to see that He-Man video of "What's Going On", then everyone is going to suffer.

Any other confessions you want to make?

Alright...I mention from time to time that I don't like being depressed watching a film, and that's true. BUT...I do enjoy sappy movies that make me cry. Two right off the bat is Dominick and Eugene (good film btw) and...I can't believe I'm admitting this...I am Sam. I like it OK? Don't look at me in that tone of voice! Just...look away. I have something in my eye.

Sleep of Death VHS Artwork

Let's see what my eyes can't believe...a guy sleeping under a shower curtain, check. Disembodied Dracula head laughing at me, check. A pillow strangled and staked with a cross, check. My desire to see this movie diminishing, check.

Nail Gun Massacre (1985)

Nail Gun Massacre (1985)
Director: Terry Lofton
Stars: Rocky Patterson, Ron Queen, and Beau Leland

This low budget flick from Texas starts off with a good old fashioned gang rape. From there, no time is wasted as people show up only to be picked off by duct taped motorcycle helmet wearing, nail gun toting nutcase who spouts off such corny one liners, I would have requested a couple of nails for each eardrum. Add in the cliched fat sheriff, and a doctor who dresses like Bruce Springsteen (or at least the guitar player from Journey) and you got a recipe that nobody in their right mind asked for.

Six Things I've Learned From Nail Gun Massacre

1. Every single body has been found "four or five hours" after they've been killed, according to doctor denim.

2. The cameraman's intentions were pretty transparent when he focused on a big ol' pair of fake boobies for several minutes.

3. The proper way of showing respect for those killed is to leave them lying beside a auto parts store while an old drunk man bitches at you.

4. Not really a spoiler (since it's so obvious they may as well write "THIS IS THE KILLER" on the screen) but when the killer is out and about, it's obviously a woman in the outfit. When they take the helmet off though, it's revealed to be a man. I may be confused, but that guy has some nice child rearing hips.

5. A great way to not get laid is to take your date to the DQ and get a grilled cheese sammich special for 1.99. Even better when your ex works there. BONUS: When they get their food, notice that the grilled cheese turns into a burger. Does the angry ex still have feelings for the douchebag? HMMM.

6. This movie has one of the funniest/most disturbing sex scenes ever. Two ugly people get it on fully nude against a tree. Flexing male buttocks activate!

Help Make the 10th Radio Show Awards Even Greater!

This weekend (most likely sunday) we will be presenting the 10th Radio Show Awards! What is that you may say? Why would you celebrate 10 shows you ask? Well to the second question...shut up. To the first question, the 10th Radio Show Awards (Haven't thought up a good short name for it yet...the Dannys?) is a fun celebration where YOU get to say which songs are played! Simply email  me at   wideweirdworldofcult@gmail.com  or send me a message on twitter (https://twitter.com/WWWofCultFilms) telling me which song/songs from the past 9 shows you want to hear again! Hell request one we haven't played yet if you want.

A big thank you to everyone who has listened and enjoyed the show. I like doing them for you and hope to continue doing these for a long time.

Tiger Joe VHS Artwork

This appears to be the run of the mill bad 80's action movie cover, right? Take a closer look...

ACTION MOVIE PHOTOBOMB!

Network (1976)

Network (1976)
Director: Sidney Lumet
Stars: Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch, William Holden

This brilliant satire about the news (written by Paddy Chayefsky) concerns a news anchor who has a breakdown live and believes God is talking to him. This does great ratings so an aggressive producer (Dunaway) takes over the show. Ratings soar, and other shows, like one concerning the daily exploits of a terrorist group, are created. But what happens when ratings start to falter?

Six Things I've Learned From Network

1. William Holden was a badass.
2. Most of the time, when a movie is loaded with stars, they kind of get in each other's way. This movie is the exception. Peter Birch, Robert Duvall, Faye Dunaway, Ned Beatty and William Holden all share the screen without overshadowing one another.
3. There should really be more soothsayers in news.
4. This film is just as relevant today (maybe more so) as it was in 1976. An example is when Birch is preaching about people learning everything from television instead of reading a newspaper or a book.
5.  I wonder if every business is as cutthroat as the network in this film. I'd like to imagine some pet store manager getting ousted by a young upstart who proceeds to fire the guy in the dog department because he didn't like the old fashioned way he put up the Kibbles N Bits.
6. This movie has the single greatest closing line in a movie ever. And yes, I'm aware I said the same thing about Willy Wonka. This one wins.

Waiting for Guffman (1996)

Waiting for Guffman (1996)
Director: Christopher Guest
Stars: Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara

A wannabe Broadway/Community theater director puts together a play on the history of Blaine, Missouri for the town's 150th anniversary. Along with his jealous music director and a cast made up of dentists, travel agents, and Dairy Queen employees, they set out to impress Mort Guffman, a Broadway producer on his way to watch their show.  It made me want to bite my pillow in anticipation of the show.

Six Things I've Learned from Waiting For Guffman

1. I really don't want to know what a penis reduction entails.
2. The song "Nothing really happens on Mars" is now stuck in my head for a week.
3. While calling someone an assface may seem like fun, don't do it when ordering a pizza. I'm still picking out strange hairs.
4. City Council people truly are bastard people. Screw the pool budget!
5. I want to enjoy lunch with my Remains of the Day lunchbox. My Pride and Prejudice thermos broke though.
6. This movie is far closer to a documentary than they think.

Demons (1985)

Demons (1985)
Director: Lamberto Bava
Stars: Urbano Barberini, Natasha Hovey, Bobby Rhodes

People get a fancy invite from some weird silver masked guy to watch a horror movie. When events in the movie start to happen in the theater, all hell breaks loose. Throw in some thugs trying to break into the theater, people trying to break out, demons, and a kickass pimp and you have one hell of a fun ride.An awesome soundtrack to boot.

Six Things I've Learned from Demons

1. If there's an ugly mask in the lobby, don't try it on. No matter how cool it may look.

2. More theaters need to have random swords and motorcycles in them. Although I could see how things could go bad after watching something like Magic Mike.

3. Although fun to do, snorting blow off an ugly woman's boob may not be the best method of getting high.

4. Tony the pimp should have had his own movie. That man is a badass with a capital B.

5. Bringing a blind man to a movie is pretty cruel, but making out with another guy nearby is just bad manners.

6.  Whenever your life is in doubt, a magical helicopter will swoop in and save you. God bless you  traffic guy in the sky who died.

Desert Commando VHS Artwork

Judging from the third grade artwork here, This movie involves a smug M. Bison and Acorn Head Albert engaging in a staring contest with an emo hooded referee. That blood behind Acorn Head? His mind exploding.
